From “Jean Renoir parle de son art: Part 3” – Jacques Rivette interviews Renoir in 1961

Rivette: Did people from different castes [in the East, in India] have the same worldview?

Renoir: It was the same, certainly. And it still is today. It was the same with us [in the West]. We were unified by Christianity. Later, we tried to divide Christendom with the idea of countries. The idea of a country is completely arbitrary, and it’s falling apart today. Honestly, one must admit that the Latin world is divided by ideology, not by countries. Today, the different languages are a barrier to unification. But the language barrier is overcome by the unifying force of a powerful new religion sweeping the world, the religion called science.
