Jean Renoir on artists & perfection (from Part 3 of a 1961 interview with Jacques Rivette, “Jean Renoir parle de son art”)

…I don’t believe in differences of importance between artworks. An artist is either interesting or not […] I mean, I either like him or I don’t.  He’s my friend or he isn’t. If he’s my friend and I like him, he can tell me anything. It’s much more interesting to listen to a friend than to hear profound truths from someone you’re indifferent to. In art, it’s very important to like the artist. […] I think this friendly contact is the essence of art. Perhaps that’s the mistake made by film producers: They struggle for perfection instead of personality. No one gives a damn about perfection! It’s like claiming a woman is loved because she’s beautiful. I’ve known beautiful women who weren’t loved – men weren’t interested. I’ve known ugly women who were adored – men were crazy about them. Beauty doesn’t mean a thing; perfection doesn’t matter. There’s something much more important than perfection: personality.
