John Ashbery on poetry readings (from a conversation with Sarah Rothenberg)

I’d much rather read poetry than listen to it. I don’t ever really enjoy listening to poets read their poems as much as reading them to myself. If they’re good poems, it’s nice enough to hear them, but I’d rather be alone with them, looking at them, seeing them rather than hearing them.
